Griante

Griante is one of the most popular tourist areas of Lake Como. It has always been a popular destination for international tourism.
This pretty village, on the slopes of Monte Crocione, is a place rich in history, art and nature.
For someone, the name comes from the Celtic “Griant tir”, land of the sun, according to others from the French “riant”, charming.
Over the years in Griante sojourned illustrious figures such as Stendhal, who set some chapters of the novel The Certosa di Parma, Giuseppe Verdi, the American poet Longfellow, the Queen Victoria, Kaiser Wilhelm 2nd, Archduke Nicholas 2nd of Russian and, more recently, the chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
The village is divided in two main parts, Cadenabbia at the lake and historical center of Griante, at the top, reached by a panoramic staircase.
In the historical center we find the Church of Saints Nabore and Felice, where celebrated Mass several times Achille Ratti , before he becoming Pope Pio XI.
Enetring in the old part of Griante, just before the archway, on the left, there is the house where Achille Ratti stayed for many years, during the holidays.
The Pontiff, known as the “mountaineer Pope,” was the protagonist of important ascents to Monte Rosa, Cervino and Monte Bianco. Driven by his passion for the mountains, he used to go to pray at the Sanctuary of San Martino, his favorite walk.
In the lower part of the village in the hamlet of Cadenabbia, we find all the prestigious villas of Griante, the building that housed a production of majolica, the Anglican church …..
