A few pointers from people who live on the lake all year round: so you can enjoy the very best of it while avoiding queues, crowds and tourist traps.

Beating the crowds

The best-known villas and villages fill up between 11am and 4pm. Visit Villa del Balbianello or Bellagio early in the morning or in the late afternoon: the same beauty, half the people. And the midday boats are always the busiest.

Boats and tickets

You can buy tickets straight from the ticket offices at the landing stages, often more quickly than online. Do bear in mind that the car ferry and the passenger boat run to different timetables: just ask us and we'll help you pick the right crossing.

With children

The grounds of Villa Carlotta are perfect for running about in the open air, the Greenway is pushchair-friendly for much of the route, and the residence pool remains the little ones' favourite spot during the hottest hours.

Beaches and swimming in the lake

Along the shore there are various access points and lidos with facilities, all just a few minutes away. The water is at its warmest from mid-June to early September. Ask us which spots are quietest depending on the time of year.

Where to eat

Between Mezzegra, Lenno and Tremezzo you'll find trattorias serving local cooking as well as places right on the water. We always tell our guests where the food is genuinely good and where you're mainly paying for the view: just ask us at check-in.

Boat hire

Boats can be hired nearby, including without a licence, so you can explore the lake at your own pace: it's the loveliest way to see the villas from the water. We'll point you towards the most reliable hire companies.

Evening shuttle

Over the summer a free evening shuttle service runs between the villages in the area. Times and stops change from season to season: ask us for the latest when you book.
