Lake Como in spring: gardens in bloom, trails, and the first days by the water

March, April, May: spring is the season that people who know this lake well rate as the best, and not just as a line in a brochure. It's when the villa gardens come back into bloom, the mountain trails gradually clear of snow, and the lake hasn't yet reached summer's numbers. It's worth being just as plain about the other side: not everything is ready yet. Here is what to actually expect, without stretching the season past what it delivers.
The weather plays its part too: spring swings between warm afternoons and sudden showers more often than summer does, so a light jacket is worth packing even in late May.
Villa Carlotta, for anyone coming specifically for the camellias
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has been known for generations for its camellias and rhododendrons, which come into bloom in these exact months. We won't give exact weeks, they shift with how the season runs, but this is the window, worth knowing if that's the actual reason for the trip.
The boats change pace too
Navigazione Laghi follows the same seasonal pattern as the villas: a reduced winter timetable, then more sailings as spring sets in. We won't publish the detail, it shifts season to season and is best checked the evening before on the official site, but it's worth knowing that in March the service still runs on winter hours, while from April it's already closer to summer's pace.
The trails, before the heat arrives
One honest caveat, already stated on our trails page: some higher stretches above Mezzegra hold snow well into spring, and it's worth asking us at check-in before setting out in the wrong shoes.
The Greenway del Lago di Como, a few steps from the apartments and linking eleven kilometres of villages between Colonno and Cadenabbia, is fully walkable from March onward, it's a low-level route, not a mountain one.
What isn't here yet
The apartments' pool opens from April and stays open until October: arriving in March, or in early April in a colder year, means it won't be ready. Better to know that before booking than to find out on arrival.
Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello also run on a seasonal calendar: after a winter reduced to a handful of open days a month, both return to a regular rhythm with spring, but the exact calendar shifts every year. Check the official FAI and Villa Carlotta sites before planning the day, not ours.

Spring's practical advantage adds to what we cover in our seasons guide: fewer people on the boats to Bellagio and Varenna than in July and August, mild temperatures for being out all day. The only thing missing is the pool, and for many guests that's a trade worth making. Anyone set on a daily swim is better off waiting for late May or June.
