Lake Como with young children: why the search points north, and when the middle of the lake still works
Anyone planning a Lake Como stay with a young child eventually searches something like "Lake Como with kids where to stay". Running that search again in late July 2026, the results converge on the same places almost every time: Domaso, Gravedona, Sorico, Colico, the northern arm of the lake.
Worth saying that before anything else, because our residence sits somewhere else entirely: Mezzegra and Tremezzina are further south, on the west shore, in the middle of the lake. A different setting, built for a different kind of trip, and it is worth explaining why before you keep reading a page about somewhere else.
Why the search ends up there
The reason is geographic, not editorial. Near Sorico and Colico the lake meets the mouth of the river Adda and opens into the Pian di Spagna plain: almost 1,600 hectares recognised as a nature reserve by the Lombardy Region in 1985, and classified as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It is the point where the lake stops being narrow and hemmed in by mountains, as it is for most of its length, and turns flat.
That flatness is also why wider beaches and playgrounds cluster in that stretch: there is simply more level ground to build them on. It is not a verdict on where the fun is, it is the shape of the land.
What changes if you stay in the middle of the lake
Tremezzina has the opposite geography: here the mountain drops almost straight into the water and the road along it is narrow, as we explained when writing about getting around this stretch without a car. It is not the right base for a family after a wide, flat beach where a two-year-old can wander off alone: on that point, the northern lake really is the more honest answer, and there is no point dressing it up.
What the middle of the lake offers instead is different. Two of the lake's most visited villas, Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello, are minutes from the apartments: forty-four on foot to the Villa Carlotta ferry landing, or one stop by boat, and about thirty to Balbianello along the Lenno promontory. Both are open-air gardens you walk at a slow pace, where a small child can run around instead of standing still in front of a display case.
The Greenway del Lago di Como, eleven kilometres between Colonno and Cadenabbia, passes a short walk from the apartments and is passable with a pushchair for most of its length: the one stretch to take slowly is the steep descent between Via Pola and Lenno. And from the same Lenno landing, thirteen minutes on foot from here, ferries reach Bellagio and Varenna without putting a tired child in a car for an hour of hairpin bends.
The pool is not a beach, but it helps
The most concrete difference for a family with a young child is the residence's pool, open from April to the end of October. It does not depend on wind or on how far you are willing to drive, and it is a short walk from the apartment exactly when a small child has had enough of sitting in a car.
We are not presenting it as a substitute: it is a different thing, and it suits families who want to mix a day at the villas or in Bellagio with a quiet garden afternoon, rather than families building the whole trip around shallow water.

- Air conditioning only in the Mimosa, Fiordaliso and Fior di Pesco apartments
- A fold-out child's bed already included in Narciso, Rose and Fior di Pesco
- No restricted-traffic zone on the way in to the apartments
- Late check-in with no fixed cut-off, useful when a flight or a drive runs long
Who this suits, and who it does not
If the whole trip is built around a flat beach where a young child can wander off unsupervised, the northern lake remains the sensible choice, and reading further here hoping for a different answer would just waste a booking decision.
If instead the family wants to see the villas, move around by boat without driving, and come back each evening to an apartment with its own kitchen and a pool on site, the middle of the lake works well, precisely because it does not try to be the other thing too.
